The Business of Fashion Week

New York Fashion Week kicked-off in style last week, refocusing the mainstream media’s attention on everything from collections to collectibles, from Acne to YSL, from high-end to High Street.

According to the British Fashion Council, 75 percent of women are now more likely to shop in their free time than read, listen to music, do sport or exercise or use the Internet; furthermore, television shows like Ugly Betty and Sex & the City have taught us that, if there are two words that define a year in fashion: “Fashion Week” is it.

About 40 fashion weeks actually take place in different cities around the world each year; but it is the Big Four –New York, London, Milan and Paris – that are the most prestigious, but smaller festivals, in countries as far-flung as Croatia, Pakistan and Iran also exist.

Each year the Big Four take place in the same order: New York, London, Milan and Paris, with each known for championing different styles – and each has more than 100 events, including runway shows, charity events, gala dinner and accessory showcases.

While New York Fashion Week is the oldest of the Big Four, having been inaugurated in 1943 by fashion publicist Elenor Lamber, it is the newest – London – which brings the most clout to MeetTheBoss.tv.

Ozwald Boateng, who this year is headlining London Fashion Week’s (LFW) first ever Men’s Day, will be speaking exclusively to the MeetTheBoss.tv in a special broadcast launching next week to coincide with LFW.

In the interview, Boateng talks about the business of fashion, how he reinvented the tired image of London’s Savile Row and how the significance of power dressing impacts business success.

“I looked at all the top designers and said what was very clear is that I had to bring something unique to the business,” he explains. “So I thought, ‘Well if Armani’s taken the structure out, I’ll put the structure back in’.”
